How DIY Hurricane Cleanup Can Create Dangerous Biohazard Situations for Homeowners

Many homeowners are unaware of the severe biohazard risks lurking in the aftermath of a hurricane.
Many homeowners are unaware of the severe biohazard risks lurking in the aftermath of a hurricane.

At Bio-One, we understand the pain and devastation that a hurricane can bring to your home and life. We know how overwhelming it is to deal with the hurricane aftermath cleanup, so we want to do everything possible to help you through this difficult time.

Here is valuable information on the biohazards that may develop in your home after a hurricane. Understanding these dangers is crucial, and Bio-One is here to safely and quickly eradicate these threats, restoring your home to a safe condition.

Hurricanes bring devastating winds, torrential rains, and storm surges that can leave homes in disarray. However, many homeowners are unaware of the severe biohazard risks lurking in the aftermath. These hazards can threaten health and safety, making it critical to handle them promptly and professionally.

Bio-One guides you through this process and addresses all biohazard risks with the utmost care and expertise.

Floodwaters that enter your home are often far from clean, and once the water recedes, it leaves behind contamination that can quickly lead to mold growth.

Mold Growth

Mold growth after a hurricane is one of the most immediate and dangerous biohazards. Floodwaters that enter your home are often far from clean, and once the water recedes, it leaves behind contamination that can quickly lead to mold growth.

The dangers of mold growth extend beyond immediate property destruction—if left untreated, they can cause significant health risks and compromise the structural integrity of your home.

  • Contaminated floodwaters: Floodwaters can carry harmful substances, including bacteria, sewage, chemicals, and hazardous materials from nearby industrial sites. When this contaminated water seeps into your home, it damages personal belongings and introduces health risks, such as gastrointestinal illnesses, skin infections, and respiratory problems.
  • Mold infestation: After a hurricane, high humidity and trapped moisture create the perfect mold conditions. Mold can begin developing within 24 to 48 hours after water exposure, and once it takes hold, it can spread rapidly throughout your home. Mold spores can cause allergic reactions, aggravate asthma, and lead to long-term respiratory issues. Certain types of mold, like black mold (Stachybotrys), are hazardous and require professional removal.
  • Hidden moisture: One of the most insidious effects of water damage is that it often hides within the walls, floors, and ceilings. Even after the surface appears dry, moisture can remain trapped in hard-to-reach areas, creating the perfect environment for mold to flourish unnoticed. Over time, this can result in severe indoor air quality issues and persistent odors.
  • Health risks from mold exposure: Mold exposure can trigger various health problems, especially those with pre-existing respiratory conditions. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, itchy eyes, sore throat, and, in severe cases, chronic lung infections. As mold remains unchecked, it becomes more hazardous, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems.

Bio-One is the leader in mold remediation services, focusing on identifying, containing, and removing mold from an affected area. If you already have a mold problem, act quickly. Mold damages what it grows on; the longer it grows, the more damage it can cause.

Experience unparalleled expertise in mold removal and cleaning, ensuring your space is safe and healthy.

Sewage Backup

Hurricanes often cause sewage systems to back up, leading to a particularly hazardous form of water damage—raw sewage flooding homes. This contamination creates significant health risks and unsanitary living conditions, which only professional cleanup and disinfection can address.

The aftermath of a sewage backup isn’t just a matter of cleaning up a mess; it involves handling dangerous pathogens and addressing long-term contamination concerns.

  • Sewage contamination: When sewage backs up into your home, it brings a toxic mix of bacteria, viruses, parasites, and other harmful microorganisms. These pathogens thrive in untreated waste and cause many health issues when humans are exposed to them. This contaminated water, known as “black water,” is hazardous and requires immediate and specialized attention.
  • Health risks from exposure to sewage: Coming into contact with raw sewage, either through skin contact or inhalation of contaminated air, can result in serious health problems. These include:
    • Gastrointestinal infections: Pathogens in sewage, such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Shigella, can cause severe stomach illnesses, including vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.
    • Skin infections: Open wounds or broken skin that come in contact with sewage can quickly become infected, leading to severe complications such as cellulitis or sepsis.
    • Respiratory issues: Inhaling vapors or aerosolized particles from sewage can irritate the lungs and airways, potentially causing respiratory infections and aggravating conditions like asthma.
    • Parasite transmission: Sewage can carry parasitic organisms like Giardia and Cryptosporidium, leading to prolonged gastrointestinal illnesses that may require medical treatment.
  • Lingering contamination: Even after visible sewage is removed, harmful microorganisms remain on surfaces and in hard-to-reach areas. Porous materials such as carpets, upholstery, drywall, and insulation are particularly vulnerable to absorbing these contaminants, making thorough disinfection and decontamination essential. Without proper treatment, your home can remain a health hazard long after the water recedes.
  • Odor and sanitation issues: Beyond the health risks, sewage backups create overwhelming sanitation challenges. The foul smell left behind by raw sewage can permeate furniture, floors, and walls, making the space uninhabitable. This odor, coupled with the visible filth, is unpleasant and a sign that the area requires extensive cleaning. Professional services are needed to eliminate the physical waste and the odors, using industrial-grade disinfectants and deodorizers that penetrate the affected areas.
  • Impact on plumbing systems: Sewage backups don’t just affect the inside of your home; they can also signal more significant problems with the surrounding sewage system or your property’s plumbing. Floodwaters can overload sewage systems, causing pipes to burst or collapse, resulting in further backups or ongoing contamination risks if not addressed by professionals.

Bio-One specializes in sewage backup cleanup, using advanced techniques to extract sewage, disinfect contaminated areas, and ensure that no harmful pathogens or foul odors remain. Our team understands the urgency of these situations and provides fast, thorough services to restore your home to a safe, livable condition.

Due to the potential for disease transmission and contamination of the environment, these biohazards demand immediate, specialized attention.

Bloodborne Pathogens and Human Waste

In the most tragic situations, the aftermath of a hurricane may involve the presence of blood, bodily fluids, and human waste, particularly in cases where injuries or fatalities have occurred.

The risk of exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous materials is a critical concern for homeowners and rescue workers. Due to the potential for disease transmission and contamination of the environment, these biohazards demand immediate, specialized attention.

  • Bloodborne pathogens: Blood and bodily fluids can carry dangerous pathogens, such as Hepatitis B (HBV), Hepatitis C (HCV), and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). These viruses are transmitted through direct contact with infected blood or bodily fluids, which makes the cleanup of such materials extremely hazardous. Without proper precautions, even a small exposure can lead to serious health consequences, including chronic disease or life-threatening infections.
  • Risk of contamination: Blood or bodily fluids in the home can quickly spread contamination, primarily when absorbed into carpets, furniture, or building materials. Skin contact, open wounds, or improper cleanup without protective equipment (PPE) increases the risk of transmission. Contaminated materials, like clothing and bedding, must be carefully disposed of following biohazard protocols to prevent further spread.
  • Human waste hazards: When hurricane survivors are stranded without proper sanitation, human waste, including feces and urine, may accumulate inside homes. This waste poses severe biohazard risks, especially when mixed with floodwaters or sewage backups. Human waste carries harmful bacteria, parasites, and viruses that can cause gastrointestinal infections, respiratory problems, and skin diseases. Human waste also contributes to unsanitary conditions and unbearable odors, making homes unlivable until professional cleanup is completed.
  • Decomposition concerns: In rare but devastating cases, when hurricane rescue operations are delayed, or access to certain areas is restricted, the presence of human remains can introduce even more severe biohazards. Decomposition begins rapidly in hot and humid environments, releasing bodily fluids and gases that can contaminate the surrounding area. The decomposition process also attracts pests and scavengers, which can further spread harmful bacteria and viruses. This creates an environment that poses immediate risks to anyone entering the area without the proper equipment or expertise.
  • Airborne pathogens and odor control: Decomposing organic matter, including human and animal remains, releases harmful pathogens into the air. The odors associated with decomposition are not only distressing but can also indicate the presence of dangerous gases like methane and ammonia. These airborne pathogens can cause respiratory issues and allergic reactions, particularly for individuals with pre-existing health conditions. Proper air filtration and odor-neutralizing techniques are essential during the remediation process to ensure the air is safe to breathe.
  • Legal and safety concerns: Cleaning up bloodborne pathogens and human waste often involves navigating legal and regulatory requirements. Cleanup must follow strict guidelines to ensure that hazardous materials are disposed of properly and the property is fully decontaminated. This is where professional biohazard remediation is essential, as attempting DIY cleanup in these situations can lead to improper handling and further contamination, not to mention potential legal liability.

Bio-One’s team of certified professionals is equipped to handle these sensitive situations with the utmost care, compassion, and professionalism. We adhere to strict biohazard remediation protocols to ensure that all affected areas are thoroughly decontaminated, and we use specialized equipment to safely remove all traces of blood, bodily fluids, and human waste.

We aim to restore your home to a safe and habitable condition while minimizing exposure to these hazardous materials.

Why DIY Cleanup of Biohazardous Dangers is Not Safe

In the aftermath of a hurricane, many homeowners may feel tempted to tackle the cleanup themselves to save time and money. However, when it comes to biohazardous dangers like water damage, sewage backups, bloodborne pathogens, and animal remains, attempting a DIY cleanup can result in serious health risks, property damage, and long-term contamination.

Here's why professional help is essential:

  • Exposure to hazardous materials: Biohazards such as raw sewage, mold, bloodborne pathogens, and decomposing animals contain dangerous microorganisms that can cause severe illnesses. Without proper protective gear and specialized equipment, exposure to these materials can lead to infections, respiratory issues, and even long-term diseases like Hepatitis or Leptospirosis. Professionals are trained to handle these hazards safely using industry-standard personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Inadequate cleaning methods: Regular household cleaning supplies are insufficient to fully decontaminate areas affected by biohazards. Specialized cleaning agents, disinfectants, and tools are required to effectively remove bacteria, viruses, and other pathogens. Professional biohazard teams use advanced cleaning techniques to ensure all contaminants are eradicated.
  • Health risks to your family and pets: Attempting DIY cleanup exposes your family and pets to harmful pathogens. Contaminated surfaces, water, and air can spread diseases, and improper handling of biohazards can worsen the problem. Children and pets are especially vulnerable to exposure, as they are more likely to come into contact with contaminated areas.
  • Risk of spreading contamination: Without the proper training, it’s easy to spread contaminants to other parts of your home unknowingly. For example, tracking sewage-contaminated water or mold spores into clean areas can create new hazards, putting more areas of your home at risk. Professionals follow strict containment procedures to prevent cross-contamination and further exposure.
  • Hidden dangers: Biohazard cleanup often involves more than just removing visible debris. Floodwater, sewage, or pathogens can seep into walls, flooring, and other structural areas. Even if surfaces appear clean, hidden moisture or contaminants may remain, leading to mold growth, lingering odors, or future health risks.
  • Legal and safety requirements: Biohazard cleanup is subject to strict regulations and standards. According to local, state, and federal regulations, hazardous materials like blood, sewage, and contaminated personal items must be disposed of. Failure to follow these guidelines can result in fines and legal liability. Professional biohazard cleanup teams are well-versed in these requirements and ensure that all biohazardous materials are handled and disposed of safely.
  • Risk of injury: Attempting to clean up after a hurricane can expose you to physical dangers, such as weakened structures, sharp debris, or electrical hazards. Professionals are trained to navigate these environments safely, minimizing the risk of injury while thoroughly removing all hazardous materials.

Hiring a professional biohazard cleanup service like Bio-One ensures that your home is restored to a safe, livable condition without exposing yourself or your loved ones to unnecessary risk. Disinfection vs Decontamination

March 30, 2020 by Rebecca Phillips

Bio-One Cherokee County COVID-19

In light of the new "super virus" break outs many argue that disinfecting at home or at work is not enough.  The belief is decontamination is king.  The problem is, how can a space touched and inhabited by numerous people ever actually be decontaminated.  And, if it can, for how long?

With the recent outbreak of COVID-19, businesses as well as individuals are wanting to eliminate the threat within their homes, or more importantly...at work.  Decontamination is the process of decreasing antimicrobial presence in an area or on a surface. Sterilization is actually a type of decontamination along with disinfection and antisepsis. Disinfection is not done to remove all contaminants, but instead reduces the amount of contamination.  In our day to day lives, disinfection seems to be the most realistic option when it comes to fighting pathogens.  Pathogens encompass viruses, bacteria, fungus, and parasites. Fighting these threats need to be done safely and with proper procedures.

If possible, use gloves during your disinfection cleaning. Start by removing all debris from your home or work space either by vacuuming or sweeping.  Then use proper EPA registered chemicals, such as Lysol or Clorox products known to kill bacteria and viruses. Remember,  not every product kills them all. You can read the label to make sure the product is registered with the EPA and to see what strains of bacteria and viruses the product kills.  Follow the directions on the bottle, always using clean disposable cloths wiping in a method as not to recontaminate areas that had already been cleaned.  Focus on "high touch" areas such as grab rails, bathrooms, kitchen counters, remotes, etc.  Keeping laundry clean and even steam cleaning upholstered furniture helps limit the risk of your home or office becoming contaminated.  Daily disinfection of high touch areas is highly recommended.

Often a space may be too large or inhabited by too many people to tackle on your own.  In this event it may be time to call in the professionals.  A bio-hazard clean up company like, Bio-One would be the best solution.  Companies such as Bio-One have highly trained technicians using proprietary chemicals, known for killing some of the strongest pathogens.  They also follow  strict protocol for proper cleaning technique and proper equipment allow for optimal conditions to reduce the risk of contaminants wreaking havoc in your daily lives.

Bio-One is committed to providing excellent service in disinfection, suicide cleanup, homicide cleanup, hoarding situations, junk removal, deceased animal recovery, feces removal, pest and rodent droppings and much more. We are independently owned and operated by a member of your local community. For more information, visit us at BioOneCherokeeCounty.com or email at Info@BioOneCherokeeCounty.com

The coronavirus is proving to be tricky to treat .  There are certain cleaning combinations that appear to kill the virus on surfaces.  The best way for cleaning those surfaces is with a solution that’s 62% to 72% ethanol, .5% hydrogen peroxide, or 0.1% sodium hypochlorite within 1 minute of contamination, according to investigators with University Medicine Greifswald and Ruhr University Bochum in Germany whose study ran as an article in press in the Journal of Hospital Infection (JHI)

The viral load of coronaviruses on inanimate objects during an outbreak is unknown, but it’s plausible that disinfection methods should help, especially when applied to frequently touched surfaces where you might expect the virus to be most potent.

For areas such as airports and cruise ships it may be best to call in professional cleaning companies.  They have access to the proper chemicals in large quantities.  Companies such as Bio-One could help disinfect large areas that are at the most risk for contamination.  www.bioonecherokeecounty.com Washing hands can not be discounted.  Using hand disinfectr in a pinch is better than nothing.

Patients who test positive for coronavirus should be quarantined until they no longer display signs of the virus.  At the first appearance of symptoms it important to seek medical attention immediately. For more information visit www.bioonecherokeecounty.com

What about using flowery plug ins or sprays?  What about fancy candles?  Nope, none of those will work.  Buyers are suspicious the minute they smell those cover ups.  Not to mention "fragrancegate" will not remove or even mask the odor.  If anything it will bring more attention to it.

If you smoke in your home and you would like to sell your home, you need to roll up your sleeves because smoke removal is not a simple process.  Let's start with step one, STOP SMOKING!  Your home AND body will thank you!  Next, try having your air ducts professionally cleaned.  Clean your walls with a soap, water and a vinegar mixture.  Green Apple Dawn seems to work well.  Have all flooring and furniture professionally cleaned. Clean all bedding, clothing, towels, etc. Remove any fabric window coverings and throw away!  These steps will help but often the smell requires more attention.

If all else fails, it's time to call in the professionals like Bio-One.  Their proprietary chemicals and air scrubbers can certainly be the solution.  The process may take a full day and you may have to leave your home for a few hours while they use what is called an ozone machine.  Even after all of this, it may be necessary to paint your walls and change out any carpet.  But, if you have a home that would regularly sell for $200,000, it will be well worth the $40,000 to $60,000 that may be added to your value and ultimately your wallet!  Contact Bio-One today for a free estimate!www.bioonecherokeecounty.com

In the unfortunate event that a guest dies in your vacation rental the first step you should take is to notify the company who the guest rented through and your insurance company.  Next, if possible, find out from the First Responders whether there are any Bio Hazards present. If it happens to be a high profile death be sure to change all lock box codes and secure any valuable items in the home.  This can be a hot bed for crooks.

Image

Image

If there are Bio Hazards present it would be best to call in a professional clean up company like Bio-One Inc.www.bioonecherokeecounty.com. When the professionals arrive they will take detailed pictures for you to present to the rental company and your insurance company. They will also document what areas of the home have Bio Hazards present.

Any items left behind by the deceased need to be catalogued and bagged for family.  It is advisable to have a third party there to take pictures prior to removing these items.

Once your rental property has been properly cleaned and all affected items disposed of in a safe manner, you should be able to re-enter the home. At this point your home should be available for new renters.

It is important to keep all receipts and information provided to you from the First Responders and Bio-One.  Submit these items to the rental company and your insurance company in a timely manner.  Typically they will work out the dispursments between themselves.  If you missed out on rental fees due to the clean up, you can request reimbursement from the rental company. You may also keep any deposits to cover missed rental opportunities or unexpected charges.

The key is to stay on top of things.  Documentation and pictures are a must.  You will find trusting professionals like Bio-One will ensure that all potential hazards are eliminated.

Loving cats is understandable, they can be the best furry family members around!   As much as we love them, they do create a problem with their urine, it can ruin a home.  This smell makes it difficult when going to sell your home or if it's time to move out of a rental property.  Getting a handle on it before it causes permanent damage is critical.

Odor from cat urine can be removed by Bio-One

Neutering your can may stop spraying

Male cats tend to be the largest culprits for urine damage.  When a male cat is not neutered, they will mark their territory leaving many surface areas damaged.  This kind of damage can go unnoticed for days or even months.  Once it penetrates flooring, and often sub-flooring, it makes it difficult to remove.

The best option in this case, is to have your cat neutered by a veterinarian-  a simple, safe practice that is often included when you adopt a cat from a shelter or rescue.

If your cat is not adopted from a shelter, it would be advisable to make an appointment with your cats vet.  The sooner the better, because spraying can get out of hand very quickly!

Investing in a good, high quality litter box, as well as good quality litter, is a must.  Clay litter does not prove to be the best at reducing urine odor and/or absorbing the excrement.  Wood pellets tend to do the best job but still require consistent cleaning.

Depending on the number of cats in your family, it may be wise to invest in multiple litter boxes.  A plastic tray is also a good choice for protecting the flooring around your litter boxes.

If it is too late for these proactive procedures you can try treating the area with a mixture of white vinegar, dish detergent and baking soda.  If this does not remove the odor, you will likely have to call in the professionals.

Litter and litter box options matter

Bio-One of Cherokee County are leaders in odor removal services.
